Recchi, Friesen, Samsonov, Oh My

Time to Step up Laddy

In his column today, Luke DeCock, says the 'Canes might look to replace Erik Cole with a free agent acquisition. He dropped the names above, and I don't dig any of them. Two are short little playmakers, and one is a big, fast, underachieving, head case. I think the 'Canes either go for a big, mean winger who can add to the chemistry, or we hold our cards until Joe Vasicek returns.

David, at Red and Black beat me up yesterday for suggesting we make a move for Keith Tkachuk. If the 'Canes really want to go for it this season, it looks like Shane Doan might be available. The Coyotes captain is a character guy who brings physicality and a scoring touch, he costs less than half a Tkachuk, and from what I've read, he's under contract thru '07.

I'm still not sold on Vasicek. He's still a bit soft for the hugener he is. I think he also has a tendency to disappear at inopportune moments. Yeah, he was the 'Canes leading goal scorer in '03-'04, but that season was a disaster.

In the wild-ass rumor of the day, Garth, blogging for the evil empire, lists possible destinations for cast-offs from the Maple Leafs implosion. Towards the bottom, he says Jeff O'Neill back to Carolina. So much for team chemistry, playing defense, practicing hard, skating hard all shift and aggressive forechecking.

I hope Andrew Ladd uses this opportunity to solidify his place with the club. He's got the physical package, and arguably better hands than Cole, so if he can stay healthy, the sky's the limit for Ladd as a Hurricane.

You still hear rumors about Jack Johnson joining the 'Canes after the NCAA season, but this would be a "nice" addition more than a essential one. I'm not sure a wild-eyed kid with a propensity to take bad penalties is what you want come playoff time.

Gonna bail out of work early today to catch tonight's tilt vs. the Rangers. I've been bitching off-and-on for months about the lack of physicality in the play of the Hurricanes. I can't think of a better punching bag for a season's worth of rage than Darius Kasparitis.

Let's Go 'Canes!

Hey! I thought WE were the evil empire. Ohhhh, that's right...we're the "nexus of Evil." My bad.

And I think Tkachuk is a great pickup for anyone who can afford him.

No way do I want Friesen here. After the way he Shanahanned the Ducks in 2002? Fuhgeddaboudit.

Recchi? Only of the commish tells the Pens to accept one of Erik Cole's jockstraps for him.

And Samsonov? No way, no way. After the way the Bruins plundered the Whalers in the Wesley "signing" (more a trade than a signing, really)? I guarandamntee you they'll look for a way to make us pay big to get back one of the draft picks that we gave up to them for Wes.

The way I see it, any trades will have to be very carefully-considered--but I've a feeling that JR will wind up standing pat at the deadline, since he more or less shot his wad with the Weight acquisition.

"Shanahan'd the Ducks..." I don't recall Friesen winning a Cup with Anaheim in '02.

Oh, you weren't referring to one of the three Cups Shanny has contributed to in Detroit?

No, he just bashed the Ducks and Anaheim and their fans, and forced a trade to a team that he wound up winning a Cup with.

But hey, if you want to ignore the shitty way that Shanahan treated Hartford, be my guest. It'd be par for the course for WingsFan.

Yeah, once again you've found a way to isolate the NHL's general problems into a Wing-specific point of view. That's fine with us. Instead of how Shanny "treated" Hartford, we prefer to remember the clinching goal in '02. I'm sure you recall it.

Typical--when trumped in an argument, bring up 2002 as if that somehow makes you right.

Thank you, I accept your surrender.

IwoCPO said...

Oh yes, an unconditional surrender AQ. And 2002's pretty relevant, considering it's obvious it's at the core of your bitterness toward the Wings. But hey..you're right. I surrender.

No, I've always hated the Red Wings from the day I started watching hockey when I was 10 years old. 2002 is simply a side-note in a long, long history of hatin'.

But please, if it makes you feel better to think that I only started hating Red Wings Nation in 2002, then far be it for me to disillusion you.

God I'm praying for a Wings 'Canes rematch. The Smack will fly, and redemption will be ours.

IwoCPO said...

Oh, you hated the Wings when they sucked in the 70's or 80's? Wow. That's some deep-seated bitterness. But I thought it was the fans and not the team you disliked so intensely? Hey, I could write more but I see that TSN's Power Rankings have been updated. Gotta go check 'em out. I'll drop Cullen a note for you.

And Cason, you frigging muck raker. You knew exactly what direction this conversation would go.

Glad to provide a forum for the WWF caliber smack-down. I, of course have nothing against the "Nexix of Evil." I loved watching Gordie Howe when I was a lad-that is when he played for the Houston Aeros.

Good to know not all you displaced tobacco roaders plot Hockeytown's destruction.

And to you and AQ, here's hoping all turns out well for Eric Cole.

No, no, no, no, no. I wasn't taking you to task for suggesting that we try to get Tkachuk. I was simply beating you up because you proposed a "trade Joe" scenario. I think Tkachuk's okay. That said, however, I don't think we need to make a push for another player. Obviously we don't have a lot of time to think about it, as Thursday is the deadline, but I really don't think we need to do anything. The balance of our regular season isn't really all that challenging. By the end of it, Joe should be in full swing. In the meantime, Ladd and Sharpie can fill in quite nicely. And yes. Sooner or later, Weight is going to make an impact in points production.

Plot Detroit's destruction?! HA! That pesthole of a town's not even worth the effort it would take!

This is like my hatred of the Celtics (my mother's favorite team) as a Lakers fan, my fiery detestation of Army (as the daughter of a SCPO (Ret.)), and my deep-seated loathing of the San Francisco Giants (also my mother's favorite team) as a Dodgers fan since birth--it's a family thing!

The fans are the mold on (and the stink in) the Limburger.

IwoCPO said...

Yeah, I can see how you'd notice the mold and stink attached to us Wing fans since you're forced to sit in such close proximity to us every time Detroit comes to Raleigh.

I have to give you credit though, most of the fans in the other cities where hockey is an afterthought lay back and take it when Wing fans take over your arenas.

Not you AQ. You have no problem showing your bitterness when Wing fans flood your barn and dare to be vocal. I respect the fact that you don't try to hide that little character flaw. It humanizes you.

Keeping faith with Joe through his rehab and back on the ice sends a message to the team. I think David's right. Now, that being said, I'd love to find a way to bring Shane Doan to Carolina. He's a difference maker in the scoring, hitting, and on-ice leadership depts. Talk is about Sanderson. He fits the New -'Canes mold. He's fast, got good hands, and he's an opportunist on the forecheck. One of the few bright spots on the 'Yotes since he came over early in the season.

Note to JR Looking ahead to the deadline: Just say no to any Leaf cast-off including McCabe, O'Neill, Antropov, and Tucker.

The Acid Queen said...

Sanderson, I'd be very careful of. He was one of the original WhalerCanes, and he was also one of the most ill-adjusted. It's from him that the original "Curse of 8" arose (a most foul curse that claimed Sandis Ozolinsh and Bob Boughner--both of whom wore #8--and brought low even the Serene Master (who was traded away in his eighth season) and Chairman Mo Teh Coach (who was fired in his eighth season). Now that the Curse has been put to rest (knock on wood), I really think that it might be a good idea to take a pass on the guy, lest the Curse rear its ugly head again.

*cough*

The easily-verifiable Curse of Eight aside, I really do think that Sanderson's time with this team has pretty much gone by the board, and has been kaputt since Greensboro.

I wish him luck, I wish him the best, and I wish him to be on another team.

CasonBlog said...

You had me at the mere mention of Oh-No!-Zolinsh. Plus I think we are already at our Ex-Dinner Jacket max, so that might exclude Sanderson.

IwoCPO said...

Cason, your boy Garth is at it again.

Leopold for Tin-mellon Connolly? Doubt they'll work that deal. Leopold should command more.

Hockey leaks has this: Chris Chelios could be a Hab, according to several sources. That is so ridiculous--for both teams--that I wouldn't even post it to laugh at it.
